IN ANY OTHER SKY

Nobody told us, but the city sits
beyond the farthest mountain,
watered by tepid streams.
We’ve compressed our desires
into a few days --
the medieval alleyways,
our hostess serving up
melon and mushrooms,
the observatory
where the crippled scientist
can change day to night
between noon and two,
pointing out stars
that don’t exist
in any other sky.

We are daunted, a little,
by tourists who return,
every evening,
from the foothills.
They report that roads
turn back on themselves,
speak of warped shadows
and the cries
of unseen, circling birds.
