When he was three
Playing around in his parents' room
Opening a drawer
Finding a box with a colorful lid
Trying to understand how different shapes fit into appropriate

holes

He dexterously plugged a bullet
Up his nose.

Voila! It fit so well, it couldn't be removed.
Poor Mama rushed him to the hospital,
nearly running over the cat on the way out of the garage.
The doctors were amused, but
Papa spanked him mercilessly
When they got home
For snooping in places he didn't belong.
