JJ Lynne

ONE FOR THE BOYS

Put your drink down.

We are going to talk
about how you came home
smelling of fire
and I bleached holes
into your black clothes
just to pull the ghost
of ash out.

We are going to dance
around the fact that other girls
twirl their tongues
into cherry stem knots
after kissing you, but I'm a prude
who wears bike shorts
under mini-skirts.

We are going to laugh
at ourselves for thinking
that a shared love of sleeping
means that we have something
in common, or that sipping
beer from the same can
makes us honest.

We are going to look
at our bond through a telescope
and find a black hole. You'll say
The stars are lost beneath the smoke,
and I'll begin your drink
where you left off, brain pulsing
like a beehive that's just been provoked.
